T-000144 — KDS Behaves Differently on Mixed Hardware Generations

← Back

Symptoms

  • Older KDS devices behave differently from newer ones.
  • Some stations:
  • Lag
  • Miss orders
  • Lose audio
  • Fail after long uptime
  • Newer stations remain stable under the same conditions.
  • Restart cadence differs by device type.
  • Issues cluster by hardware model, not by role or location.

Likely Causes

  • CPU/RAM limitations on older hardware under current load.
  • Different GPU / graphics driver behavior.
  • OS-level differences (kernel, drivers, libraries).
  • Thermal throttling on fanless or aging devices.
  • Storage latency (old flash / SD media).
  • Newer KDS builds optimized implicitly for newer hardware.

Notes

  • This is a platform divergence issue, not a configuration bug.
  • Very common late in a system’s life when software evolves.
  • Creates “haunted” behavior that appears random but isn’t.
